The answer is simple although most people fail to understand the significance of eating foods which are less processed and therefore more natural--as nature intended. The key here is to eat more foods which provide nutrient density (e.g., fruits and vegetables) and not calorie density (e.g., muffins, ice cream). Lean toward foods which contain a plethora of micronutrients (i.e., vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals). Emphasis should be on phytochemicals (e.g., beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin) because these chemical compounds, provided by nature, may inhibit preventable diseases (e.g., diabetes, stroke, cancers, etc.). Here's a simple acronym to remember so you can use it the next time you go shopping:
G--Greens (e.g., broccoli, spinach, kale, etc.)
B---Beans / berries (e.g., black beans, garbonzo beans, blueberries, etc.)
S---Seeds (e.g., pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.)
The foods indicated above are loaded with micronutrients including phytochemicals and should be eaten daily. Oh, by the way, eating more foods high in micronutrients also reduces the appetite for calorie-dense processed foods. So make a mixed salad containing plenty of green veggies, onions, mushrooms, beans or berries, and seeds. Then eat your salad each and every day for optimum health and to aid in the quality and quantity of your years. Eliminate the food addiction cycle of processed foods with high sugar and salt and look the other way when it comes to the latest fad diet. By eating the foods described above, you will reduce your bodyweight and risk of heart disease, stroke, cancers, and diabetes. Stop taking prescribed medications that simply address pains and ills but don't get to the source of the problem--an unhealthy eating plan. The choice is yours to make.
