The field of sports medicine is broad but of interest to the personal trainer is what advice should be given to clients who have been injured. There are a multitude of therapeutic modalities that can be employed when treating a workout injury. The purpose of each of these treatments is to lessen inflammation and pain, decrease muscle spasms, increase range of movement, and increase strength, endurance and power. Of course there are many factors which may impede the healing process such as the extent of the injury, degree of inflammation or hemorrhage, amount of peripheral blood circulation, possible infection, and health status (i.e., age, nutrition, etc.). The following are the most recommended therapeutic modalities to treat injuries post-workout:
